Let us get started with some tasty and simple Vegetable Manchurian

Vegetable Manchurian is probably one of the most popular recipes on the internet. And is definitely one of the most popular Street foods in India. Every vegetarian and for a fact, even the non-vegetarians love veg Manchurian. And that is because it is healthy, it is tasty, and it is so easy to make. Today I bring you my vegetable Manchurian recipe. And I am sure you will find it very easy to make and you will just love how it tastes.

Is it really Chinese?

It is an Indo Chinese dish that is less Chinese and more Indian. Although this can be highly debatable. I personally believe that Indian street food has completely changed the vegetable Manchurian that we know. And it is completely different from the authentic Chinese version of the vegetable Manchurian. We have made it Indian over the years that is mainly because we add more Indian ingredients than Chinese ingredients. In a lot of street food stalls, the vendors don’t even add soya sauce anymore these days. So we can practically say that the vegetable Manchurian we have been eating all these years is Indian.

It is a very simple and quick recipe, so without any further delay let’s get started with the recipes.

The Vegetable Manchurian Balls

So this is the best part about vegetable Manchurian, to be very honest and it is mainly because the more vegetables we add the more healthy it becomes, also the taste increases a lot. As a cost-cutting method Street vendors add a lot of cabbage and that is mainly because cabbage is very cheap. But if you are making it for the home you don’t have to add only cabbage. You can add all sorts of vegetable that you like, capsicum, onion, carrots, beans, and so on.

But for this specific recipe, I have added chopped onions, cabbage, and some corn flakes powder. If you have read my Kung pao chicken recipe you would know that I use corn flakes powder to make the chicken crispy. So just like that, I have added corn flakes powder in this recipe to make it crispy and it is so much better than cornstarch or refined flour and gives a much better taste guys.

So what you have to do is cut all the vegetables that you want to you include in your vegetable Manchurian balls very finely. You can definitely grate them as well because that is much easier and quick but that way you are losing out on a lot of juices. That comes out of the vegetables. It basically means you are losing nutrients from the vegetables. So I would recommend you to take a sharp knife and cut it very finely as I have done. And then add a handful of corn flakes powder with very little of refined flour.

Just for the binding and some salt and pepper. Now street food vendors also add MSG and ginger garlic paste so feel free to add that as well and to be very honest I add MSG because it just gives a better taste. Also, feel free to add some MSG and trust me it is not at all unhealthy. Click here to read more about MSG and its effects on health. Then mix all of that properly so that it forms into a cohesive mixture.

Then make small balls out of it and fry until golden brown.

The Vegetable Manchurian Sauce

I’m really gonna make this recipe very easy for you so we will just divide the whole recipe into two components. The first one we have already discussed that is the vegetable Manchurian balls and the second one is the vegetable Manchurian sauce.

So for the sauce, you need some chopped ginger and garlic, some chopped onions, chopped green chillies, soya sauce, green chilli sauce, red chilli sauce, tomato ketchup, some chilli powder, white pepper powder, little vinegar, some Ajinomoto or MSG and to garnish it we just need some chopped spring onions.

Just to make it taste better for myself I have added some capsicum because I just love them. But it’s completely optional and totally up to you if you want to add them.

For the Manchurian Balls

  • ½ Cabbage (finely chopped)
  • 1 large onion (finely chopped)
  • 1 Carrot (finely chopped)
  • 1 Capsicum (finely chopped)
  • 50 g Corn Flakes Powder
  • 30 g refined Flour
  • ½ tspn MSG
  • Salt as required
  • Pepper as required

For Sauce

  • 20 ml Oil
  • 1 tspn Ginger (finely chopped)
  • 1 tspn Garlic (finely chopped)
  • 1 small onion (finely chopped)
  • 5 Green Chillies (chopped)
  • 1 tbsp Soy Sauce
  • 1 tbsp Green Chilli Sauce
  • 1 tbsp Red Chilli Sauce
  • 1 tbsp Ketchup
  • 10 g Corn Starch
  • 1/ tspn White pepper powder
  • Salt as required
  • Pepper as required
  • 1 bunch Spring Onions (chopped)


  1. So we will start with chopping all the vegetables for Manchurian balls very finely. Like cabbage, onion, carrot, capsicum, and then add some corn flakes powder, refined flour, MSG, salt, and pepper to it.vegetable manchurian
  2. Now if required add a little water and mix everything to form a cohesive mixture so that we can make small balls out of it.mixture
  3. Once you are done making the balls deep fry them in hot oil until golden brown and crisp.deep fryvegetable manchurian balls
  4. Now before you start with the sauce I want you to do all the cutting, chopping and prepare everything in advance so that you don't end up burning the sauce when your cooking because we will do it in high flame.vegetable manchurian prep
  5. In a Chinese wok take some vegetable oil and then heat it till it smokes. Once it comes to a smoking temperature at your chopped ginger and garlic.
  6. Saute the ginger and garlic for a while and then add your chopped onions, green chillies, and again cooking for 20 seconds.
  7. After that, add al the sauces like soya sauce, green chilli sauce, red chilli sauce, ketchup, and the little corn starch slurry. Now to make things easier you can make a common sauce before even starting the cooking process by mixing all the sauces with the corn starch and some water.
  8. Then cook it for 20 seconds and add all your deep-fried vegetable Manchurian balls and now it's time to cook it for a minute on high flame and keep stirring so that it does not stick to the pan.manchurian
  9. Towards the end lower the flame and then add your chopped spring onions for the garnish and also check for seasoning if some salt and pepper are required please adjust according to your taste.


  • As I always say for Chinese cooking you need to prepare everything in advance because once you start the cooking process you don't end up burning anything while doing the cooking on very high flame.
  • Also to make the vegetable Manchurian balls you can always grate your vegetables but I would not recommend it because you lose a lot of vegetable juice while grating it and you are losing up a lot of nutrients.
  • Also, the addition of MSG is totally ok for your health, it is not at all harmful.
  • Please get yourself Chinese wok, it is a long time investment and it works very well with all your Chinese cooking.
